As we observe the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, Mabati Technical Training Institute stands at the forefront of a vital mission of securing our soil and sustaining our Future. This year’s theme, \u201dUnited For Land. Our Legacy. Our Future,\u201d calls us to action to ensure the stability and prosperity of future generations through responsible land stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Mabati Technical Training Institute (MTTI), we advocate and actively participate in the global movement toward land restoration and drought resilience. Our permaculture initiatives are more than farming techniques; they are a promise to future generations that we will leave behind a world richer in life and possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MTTI’s permaculture program is a pioneer of innovation, demonstrating how regenerative agriculture can revitalize ecosystems, restore soil health, and foster biodiversity. This comprehensive approach aligns with this year’s global focus, spotlighting the transformative power of sustainable land management as a scheme for a better future on land for all generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Permaculture is all about creating sustainable habitats and food systems by integrating people and nature. It promotes growing food and medicinal plants while protecting wildlife. In permaculture, nothing goes to waste. Garden scraps are composted to enrich the soil, and rain barrels collect nutrient-rich water for plants and wildlife. This method eliminates the need for pesticides, as the garden’s ecosystem naturally controls pests. Companion planting also helps attract beneficial insects and animals that will feed on pests in the permaculture garden. By fostering an autonomous environment, permaculture nurtures the land and its inhabitants, offering an integrated approach to sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education is the seed of change, and at Mabati Technical Training Institute, we nurture this seed by empowering local farmers with knowledge and skills. In the last 4 months, the Safal MRM Foundation has been promoting Permaculture training as an alternative technical vocational skill for youth in Kilifi County. In partnership with Herbivore, a local permaculture company, over 400 youth have been trained in the following areas; Introduction to regenerative\/permaculture gardening, composting, and importance of compost waste production and management and production of organic manure. These workshops on sustainable farming are not just lessons; they are tools for building a world where every patch of land is a fortress against desertification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our commitment to regenerative agriculture is unwavering. This method is a dual force, replenishing the earth and combating climate change by capturing carbon. With every cover crop, crop rotation, composting, diverse planting, and agroforestry, we improve soil structure, enhance water retention, and promote a thriving biodiversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
