WHAT WE DO

Mabati Technical Training Institute

A BEACON OF HOPE

In an impoverished area of Kaloleni District on the coast of Kenya, the Mabati Technical Training Institute is a beacon of hope.

In this semi-arid area lies Mariakani Town, home to 100,000 people. The environment is only suitable for subsistence farming, and scarce water resources force women and children to travel long distances to fetch fresh water. Education levels are low and most youth do not have the opportunity to access quality vocational training in the area.

KNOWLEDGE EMPOWERS

The Mabati Technical Training Institute offers disadvantaged young men and women the opportunity to acquire skills that will enable them to sustainably participate in the workforce in order to support themselves and their families.

The Institute also strives to ensure that most students are gainfully employed on completion of their courses, which further contributes to the socio- economic upliftment of the wider community in the area.

Started in 2005, the Mabati Technical Training Institute has delivered 696 NITA Certified graduates in 10 years, and the Mariakani area is richer for over a decade of young people who have been through its hands.

VOCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS

The Mabati Technical Training Institute has more than 550 students in any given year, both part time and full time, and applications for places in the Institute increase every year. The Trades offered are:

Electrical Wireman / General Fitter / Tailoring & Dressmaking / Welding / Turning / Electrical Fitter / Motor Vehicle Mechanic / Auto Electrical / Hairdressing / Beauty Therapy / Computers

Further short courses are re- considered every year as the curriculum is kept both appealing and locally relevant. All courses adhere to the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology, & National Industrial Training Authority (NITA) curriculum. Short courses are certified by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority of Kenya, and other bodies.

STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN NITA EXAMS

Exam results obtained are exemplary:-

The Institute believes that success is dependent on a balanced development of the total person.

Through talks, seminars and various extra-curricular activities, the youth are encouraged to embrace solid values and to take responsibility for their lives. They are also encouraged to discover their talents through competitions held in the fields of sport, music, dance and drama.

AND BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: BUILDING STRONG INDIVIDUALS THAT WILL SUCCEED

The Alumni body of past students is very active, sharing their experiences with outgoing students and giving first hand advice as to what to expect in the world of work. They also inform the Institute of any job opportunities in the companies where they work.

The Mabati Technical Training Institute was seeded with land and buildings from Mabati Rolling Mills Ltd which is based in Mariakani and with grant funds from the European Investment Bank.

Whilst some income is generated from the production units within the school, this does not cover costs. Further funding is sourced through grants, donations and sponsorships.
