At the Mabati Technical Training Institute (MTTI), we offer sponsorship opportunities to bright trainees from vulnerable backgrounds who are not able to access training opportunities because of poverty and lack of sustainable livelihoods of parents and caregivers. Some of the trainees enrolled at our training institute are orphans, being raised up by single parents or from extremely disadvantaged families. We realized that trainees who leave school before graduating find a hard time during employment and will most likely have diminished lifetime earnings compared to those that complete their course.
We recently introduced a new course at MTTI, Accounting Technician Diploma. This course is for trainees who wish to qualify and work as entry level accounting and management personnel in small and medium enterprises, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), public sector entities and related areas. The examination is rigorous and standards are high, therefore demanding full attendance of school for an equivalent of six months of full time study for each level of the examination. This can only happen when the trainee has full assurance of fee payment, which amounts to Kshs. 90,000 or USD.900 for the full tuition fee.
Currently, the minimum cost of training a student per semester at the Mabati Technical Training Institute is $500-$900, depending on the course. The amount covers meals, training materials and external exams. So far, we have had many trainees benefit from the sponsorship.
According to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Scholarship programs are a long-standing human capital development strategy, particularly in developing countries. Since then we have seen governments, private philanthropies and other organizations undertaking efforts to achieve this goal.
Almost 50% of our trainees from the Mabati Technical Training Institute have so far benefitted from our partial and full scholarship programs, courtesy of KCB Foundation and the Safaricom Foundation. This year, we have about 80 trainees eligible for sponsorship. Unless supported to cover the cost of their training, these trainees have a very high chance of dropping out of MTTI.
Lina Kilawa is a 25 year old girl from Kilifi County who has benefitted from the Foundation’s scholarship program. She trained in Hairdressing and Beauty therapy and after graduation established her own beauty shop and hair salon in Mariakani. She is currently earning a decent income that has enabled her to provide for her 5 year old son and 5 of her siblings with schooling and other basic needs. With her daily income, she managed to open a savings account with KCB Bank and is now qualified to access credit to boost her business. Her biggest wish is that her salon business will grow and enable her become stable. “Now that I have trained in Beauty and Therapy, I hope to begin offering beauty services and purchase more products to serve many customers visiting the shop.”
With your support, we can have more trainees like Lina benefitting from our training programs and starting successful businesses to sustain their livelihoods. We are grateful for the support from our partners who have sponsored many bright needy students to realize their dreams. Together, we have the opportunity to transform more lives increase employment opportunities for youth to enable them earn decent income.
