In the heart of Mariakani, Kilifi County, lies MTTI, a gateway to opportunity for young minds eager to defy convention and carve their path in traditionally male-dominated fields. Among these determined souls is Amina Shee Malumbo, a spirited young woman whose journey from high school graduate to aspiring plumber is as inspiring as it is unconventional.
Having completed her high school education in 2023, Amina found herself at a crossroads. Despite the persistent whispers of societal norms nudging her towards beauty and hairdressing, Amina harbored a different dream, one fueled by wrenches, pipes, and the satisfaction of hands-on work. Plumbing wasn’t just a “men’s course” or “men’s work” in her eyes; it was an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and prove that gender had no place in determining one’s career path.
Undeterred by the naysayers, Amina took a bold leap of faith and applied for the KCB Foundation scholarship, a driving force for aspiring students like herself. To her elation, she emerged victorious, securing the financial support she needed to pursue her passion at MTTI.
As she stepped foot into the halls of MTTI, Amina was prepared to be the lone trailblazer, the sole female amidst a sea of male counterparts. However, what greeted her was a delightful surprise, she was not alone. She was among a cohort of ten fearless young women, each defying stereotypes and embracing the challenge of plumbing and pipe fitting with unwavering determination.
Now, five months into her course, Amina thrives in her element. The clang of metal, the smell of solder, and the satisfaction of a job well done fuel her passion each day. But beyond the technical skills she acquires, it’s the camaraderie with her classmates, both male and female, that truly enriches her experience at MTTI.
But Amina’s aspirations extend far beyond the confines of the workshop. While her immediate goal is to establish her own plumbing company, create job opportunities, and drive change within her community, her ultimate dream remains unchanged, to join the Kenyan Defense Forces as a plumber, serving her country with pride and skill.
Amina’s story is not just one of personal triumph; it’s a testament to the transformative power of education and opportunity. Through the Education initiative of Safal MRM Foundation, MTTI is breaking down barriers and opening doors for young women like Amina, empowering them to pursue their dreams without fear or limitation.
As she forges ahead on her journey, Amina stands as an inspiration to future generations, proving that with determination, resilience, and a sprinkle of courage, anything is possible, even shattering stereotypes, one pipe at a time.
