Igniting Innovation: Safal MRM Foundation Champions Young Scientists Kenya’s 2025 Bootcamp

The Safal MRM Foundation believes that innovation begins when young minds are given the tools, support, and opportunities to thrive. This vision came to life at the Young Scientists Kenya 2025 STEM Bootcamp, where we proudly hosted and empowered over 100 of Kenya’s brightest students alongside 60 dedicated STEM teachers for an unforgettable week of learning, innovation, and inspiration.

Held from April 7th to 11th, 2025, at the Mabati Technical Training Institute and Mabati Medical Centre in Mariakani, the Bootcamp was a dynamic platform to nurture ideas that will drive Kenya’s next chapter of growth and resilience.

Over five dynamic days, students from different schools across Kenya gathered for an immersive journey into innovation, entrepreneurship, and real-world STEM application. Organized by Young Scientists Kenya, in partnership with Safal MRM Foundation, Premchandbhai Foundation, Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM), and other organizations on the same wavelength, the boot camp was a vibrant showcase of ideas, creativity, and purpose.

Engaging Design Thinking Session

A Week of Learning, Innovation, and Transformation

Each day of the Bootcamp introduced participants to critical entrepreneurial and scientific skills:

  • Day 1: Entrepreneurship training, motivational talks, and project presentations
  • Day 2: Design thinking – transforming ideas into practical business solutions
  • Day 3: Product development, market research, and a transformative plant tour at MRM Mariakani
  • Day 4: Storytelling for entrepreneurs and a practical pitch workshop
  • Day 5: Career mentorship sessions, a SEACOM industry overview, and a closing ceremony at Swahili Pot Hub

Through hands-on workshops, inspirational talks, and industry exposure, students developed not only technical knowledge but also the confidence to dream bigger and lead boldly.

Bringing STEM to Life:

At Safal MRM Foundation, we were proud to:

  • Host the event at Mabati Technical Training Institute and Mabati Medical Centre: spaces that represent our commitment to community education, youth empowerment, and healthcare.
  • Offer mentorship and logistical support: nurturing talent through direct engagement.
  • Demonstrate real-world STEM applications: giving students tangible examples through MTTI’s vocational courses such as Electrical Wireman and Plumbing.

Mabati Rolling Mills (MRM Ltd)

At Mabati Rolling Mills, students participated in a transformative plant tour where they saw modern manufacturing practices in action.

During the visit, students engaged in discussions on environmental sustainability, learning how the company promotes a circular economy, operates under NEMA-approved standards, and implements Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) practices to minimize ecological impact.

This experience gave students a deeper appreciation of how STEM skills and responsible industry practices go hand-in-hand in building a sustainable future.

Premchandbhai Foundation: Investing in Kenya’s Future

The Premchandbhai Foundation, a key partner, continued its legacy of empowering Kenya’s youth by:

  • Providing mentorship, meals, and logistical support during the Bootcamp.
  • Continuing its commitment to scholarships for 100+ STEM students annually, some of whom are alumni of the YSK platform.

A highlight was the inspiring talk by Gheidah Abdalla, founder of “Girls I Save” and a former Premchandbhai Foundation scholarship beneficiary. Gheidah’s story was a living testimony of how strategic investment in youth changes lives, communities, and futures.

The Impact and the Way Forward

The Bootcamp was a launchpad for the next generation of innovators.

Students left equipped with skills in problem-solving, design thinking, pitching, and enterprise development. The momentum continues through ongoing mentorship, scholarships, and strategic support for future educational initiatives.

At Safal MRM Foundation, we remain steadfast in our mission to unlock potential, nurture talent, and champion innovation. The YSK 2025 STEM Bootcamp is a powerful reminder that when we invest in young people, we invest in the future of Kenya.
